Pillar Candle Care

Candles with a larger diameter may require more attention while burning. For many candle lovers, caring for and observing the flame is part of the pleasure and experience the candle provides until the last drop of wax. That is why we have prepared this short guide, which explains practically everything you need to know about the delicate nature of pillar candles.

Preparation and safety measures

  • Be sure to remove the label before lighting the candle.
  • Place the candle on a heat-resistant mat or plate that is wider than the candle.
  • We do not recommend placing candles in lanterns or storm lamps, as enclosed spaces trap heat and accelerate melting, which can cause wax to spill.
  • Placing several pillar candles close to each other or near heat sources can have the same effect.

Care for the wick

  • Do not trim the wick before lighting the candle for the first time.
  • Before each subsequent lighting, trim the wick to 5–6 mm (¼") if it becomes too long.
  • If a black, mushroom-like buildup (carbon mushroom) forms at the tip of the wick during burning, remove it promptly using proper wick scissors.
  • After trimming, always remove any residue that has fallen into the melt pool.

While the candle is burning

  • When a softened wax wall forms around the wick near the edge of the candle, hold the candle with both hands and carefully push the softened edge slightly closer to the flame using your fingers.
  • If the flame flickers or produces smoke, gently adjust the wax edge, trim the wick, or move the candle away from any draft.
  • If the candle appears likely to spill, trim the wick and straighten it if it has bent or fallen to the side.

    If the wax pool spills:
  • Extinguish the candle.
  • Trim the wick using some of the cooled, spilled wax if needed.
  • Use the cooled wax to seal the spill.
  • Relight the candle

End of use

  • Extinguish the candle when approximately 1–2 cm  (1") of wax remain to prevent excessive heat buildup at the base.
  • To remove wax residue from the base or candle holder, place it in the freezer. This will help release the wax from the surface.
